Capesize rebounds sharply as Atlantic and Pacific rates strengthen
Capesize: The C5TC surged $2,511 to $37,162/day, reversing the previous session’s decline. Every reported route advanced: C8 Atlantic round voyage gained $5,125/day, C14 rose $2,714/day and C10 Pacific round voyage added $2,077/day. The broad recovery suggests renewed prompt demand and firmer owners’ positioning. Brazilian and West African iron ore shipments remain potential sources of Atlantic support, although ballast vessels repositioning toward the basin could limit sustained gains.
Panamax: P5TC improved $258 to $17,049/day, with all five contributing timecharter routes higher. P3A gained $442/day and P2A added $381/day. Despite the rebound, grain routes P7 and P8 softened, indicating that improvement is not uniform across cargo markets. Ample Atlantic tonnage, Chinese coal demand and South American grain seasonality remain important factors to monitor.
Supramax: S11TC fell $143 to $23,193/day. All eleven contributing routes declined, led by S15 (−$300/day) and S3 (−$259/day). Pacific mineral and grain movements and potential bauxite-related demand may provide selective support, but current assessments show continued broad-based pressure.
Handysize: HS7TC rose $44 to $18,296/day. Six of seven routes improved, including HS4 (+$207/day), HS1 and HS2 (+$143/day each). HS3 remained the exception, falling $427/day, underscoring regional divergence despite a modestly firmer overall market.
FFA: November FFA midpoints are Capesize 5TC $36,175/day (based on a provisional $36,000 November bid), Panamax 5TC $18,200/day, Supramax 10TC $20,450/day, and Handysize 7TC $17,875/day. Front-month strength in Cape and Panamax contrasts with continued weakness in Supramax physical rates. Deferred prices remain below near-term quotations in several sectors, reflecting a cautious longer-term outlook.
Bunkers: VLSFO softened again at Singapore ($981/MT), Rotterdam ($760/MT), Fujairah ($975/MT) and Durban ($1,068/MT), while Houston edged up to $841/MT. Lower fuel costs provide some voyage-cost relief. Indian Subcontinent quotations are reproduced as supplied, with missing grades shown as unavailable.
